What is the mythology behind Bhai Dooj?

Lots of legends are attached with Bhai Dooj. One of the famous legends says that one day, Lord Yama or Yamraj (the Hindu god of death) went to see his sister Yami. She welcomed Yamraj by putting talkand by giving garland and aarti. Lots of special sweets and special foods were organized by her. The Yamraj became very happy with her offerings and he declared that day all the brothers who receive this special offering on that day will be blessed with long, graceful and good life. So, the festival also became popular by the name as Yamadvitiya.

There is also another story behind this. The second story says Yami with Yamrajson and daughter of Lord Surya were left behind. After living separately for several years, they again met and the Yamraj became overwhelmed by their bond. That time Yamraj’s sister married a prince and they welcomed Yamraj warmly in their house. So, many people have believed that the festival must be done only by the married sisters.

Another legend says that Lord Krishna killed demon Narkasur on this very day. He went to see his sister Subhadra after this event. On that day Subhadra welcomed Lord Krishna with the tilak on the forehead, aarti, and sweets. Henceforth the festival of Vatridwitiya started on this special day.

What is the Bhai Dooj Pooja method?

The puja process for the Bhai Dooj is very simple. In the ritual, the sister gives a marking, called tilak on the forehead and offers sweet for the brother. Brother gives gifts to the sister in return. In many occasions, the brother is offered the flowers of pumpkin, betel leaves and nuts and coins.

However, ceremonies differ from different places to different regions. In Nepal, seven colors of tilak are used. Sandalwood paste as tilak is used in case of Bengal.

Depending on the region and preferences by people many special sweets are prepared on this occasion on this day. Basundi puri is prepared in Maharashtra for Bhai Dooj. Khaja, a sweet snack is prepared in West Bengal.

Another similar festival like the Bhai Dooj is Raksha Bandhan. It is not so very different from Bhai Dooj in terms of ritual. The sister bonds a tie on the brother’s hand and in turn both the brother and sister exchanges gifts between themselves. It is a lovely festival that encompasses a sweet bond between the brother and sister for all life.
